Description:
In early July 2013, a Punjab Police cop Surjit Singh SI revealed that he was part of a widespread and systematic practise of fake encounters of Sikh youth by Punjab police; in which he extra-judicially killed many Sikh youth at the order his superior police officers.
In front of media he openly and repeatedly admitted he was promoted directly from the post of a constable to the post of Station Head Officer (SHO) and was deployed at Mehta police station in 1993.
Surjit Singh SI, who was suspended soon after he made these disclosures, claimed that his life was in danger and his superiors, on whose orders he killed Sikh youth in fake encounters could get him eliminated.
On 2 July, 2013 Surjit Singh SI approached Punjab and Haryana High Court for his security. He also submitted a list of 16 Fake encounters in the High Court along with his petition; but the High Court refused to provide his security and said that Surjit Singh SI must have approached superior police officers in this regard.
Surjit Singh SI’s disclosures have once again brought the issue of fake encounters and human rights abuses by Punjab police during 1990s into the focus.
SikhSiyasat.Com decided to take up this issue in 14th Episode of Qaumi Malse. Senior Advocate and Human Rights lawyer Mr. Rajwiner Singh Bains and Bibi Paramjeet Kaur Khalra (Khalra Mission Organization) participated in this talk-show that was conducted by Parmjeet Singh Gazi.
